The Significance of Hajj

The Hajj is a demonstration of the solidarity of the Muslim people, and their submission to Allah (SWT). It follows the footsteps of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his family. The rites of Hajj are performed over five or six days, beginning on the eighth and ending on the thirteenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar.

It is a time for Muslims to cleanse their souls, revive their faith, and ask for forgiveness. Standing on the plains of Arafat is the pinnacle of the pilgrimage, often described as a rehearsal for the Day of Judgment.

Typical Hajj Itinerary (Day by Day)

Note: The exact dates depend on the sighting of the moon. This outlines the standard rituals for Hajj al-Tamattu.

Arrival & Umrah

Pilgrims arrive in Jeddah or Medina. Those arriving in Jeddah proceed to Makkah to perform Umrah (Tawaf and Sa'i) and then exit the state of Ihram until the 8th of Dhul Hijjah.

8th Dhul Hijjah (Day of Tarwiyah)

The Hajj Begins: Pilgrims re-enter the state of Ihram and proceed to Mina, a tent city about 8km from Makkah. Pilgrims spend the day and night here in prayer and reflection, reciting the Talbiyah.

9th Dhul Hijjah (Day of Arafat)

The Pinnacle of Hajj: After Fajr, pilgrims move to the plains of Arafat. Standing in Arafat (Wuquf) is the most critical part of Hajj. Pilgrims spend the entire day in supplication and repentance until sunset.

After sunset, pilgrims move to Muzdalifah to pray Maghrib and Isha combined and collect pebbles for the stoning ritual. The night is spent under the open sky.

10th Dhul Hijjah (Yawm al-Nahr)

Eid al-Adha: Pilgrims return to Mina to perform the symbolic Stoning of the Devil (Ramy al-Jamarat - strictly the large pillar). Following this, the animal sacrifice (Qurbani) is performed, hair is shaved or trimmed (Halq/Taqsir), and pilgrims may remove Ihram.

Pilgrims then proceed to Makkah for Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa'i, then return to Mina.

11th - 13th Dhul Hijjah (Days of Tashreeq)

Pilgrims stay in Mina and perform the stoning of all three pillars (Small, Medium, and Large) each day. This is a time of celebration, prayer, and community.

Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada)

Before departing Makkah, pilgrims perform the final Farewell Tawaf at the Kaaba, completing their Hajj journey.

Visit to Medina (Ziyarah)

Many pilgrims choose to visit the Prophet's Mosque (Al-Masjid an-Nabawi) in Medina either before or after the Hajj rites to pay their respects to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
